Take Time for Self-Care During the Holidays

12/10/2020

With all the decorating, baking, shopping, wrapping, and planning, it’s easy to get swept up in the chaos of the holidays and forget about one important thing: taking care of yourself.

Yes, you want everything to be perfect at Christmas time, especially after the difficult year 2020 has been. But if you’re not taking some time out to just breathe – and pamper yourself a little – then you’re going to be physically and emotionally drained before any of the celebrations begin.
Keep these self-care tips in mind, so you can truly enjoy a memorable holiday season.
Set Priorities for the Season
Think about what’s important to you and your loved ones during the holidays and focus on those things. Maybe it’s a meaningful family tradition, a favorite charitable activity, baking Christmas cookies, or just spending time together. Realize that saying “no” to some activities, gatherings, or requests is ok. When you try to do too much, you’ll miss out on what’s truly important.
Set Realistic Expectations
Don’t think you have to have magazine-worthy holiday décor, homemade gifts, or the perfect Christmas dinner. Do the holidays the way you want to and don’t compare yourself to others. Set realistic expectations, give yourself some grace, and do what makes you happy this time of year.
Calm Your Mind
Slow down, calm your mind, and be present in the moment. Christmas should be a time of peace and joy, not chaos and anxiety. Take a moment to sit in front of the tree with a cup a tea, listen to holiday music, take a few breaths, and just be.
Continue Your Healthy Habits
Drink plenty of water and stock your kitchen with healthy foods. Schedule time for exercise. Whether it’s your normal sweat session or just a walk outdoors, keep up your routine. And no matter how long your holiday to-do list is, don’t skimp on sleep. It’s so important to be well rested.
Pamper Yourself
We know it’s the season of giving and you’re probably more focused on others right now. But you deserve to spoil yourself, too. Consider a massage or schedule a facial or other skin care service that you might not normally indulge in. You can reduce stress and give your skin a healthy glow. Remember, you can’t take care of others when your tank is on empty. So, take time for yourself and refuel, even for just an hour or so.
